What is converter slag splashing technology?

Answer: converter slag splashing technology is a new technology developed in recent years to improve furnace life. Based on the widely used slag protection technology of adding MgO containing slagging agent to slag in 1970s, it uses oxygen lance to inject high-pressure nitrogen to spray the residual slag left in the furnace on the whole converter lining surface within 2-4 minutes, forming a slag protection layer. This technology can greatly increase the life of converter with less investment, simple process and remarkable economic benefits.

This technology was developed by Praxair gas company of USA and applied in Great Lakes branch of Gonghe steel company. It has not been popularized after being implemented in Dahu plant and granitecity plant. In 1991, the Indiana habor plant of LTV company in the United States used slag splashing as part of the overall furnace protection. In September 1994, the lining life of 252t top bottom combined blown converter reached 15658 heats, the gunning material consumption was reduced to 0.37kg/t steel, the gunning material cost was saved by 66%, and the converter operation rate was increased from 78% in 1987 to 97% in 1994. The slag splashing technology can keep the lining in balance for a long time in the service life of the furnace.

What is the basic principle of slag splashing technology?

Answer: the basic principle of slag splashing technology is to adjust the composition of the remaining end slag after tapping the converter, and form a high melting point slag splashing layer on the surface of the lining by using the end slag with saturated or supersaturated MgO content and splashing by high-pressure nitrogen, as shown in Fig. 2-1. The slag splashing layer has good corrosion resistance and can reduce the mechanical erosion of furnace lining during steelmaking process, so as to protect the lining bricks, slow down the damage degree and prolong the lining life.
